On Sunday the Worcester Sharks (AHL affiliate of the NHL San Jose Sharks) hosted Pink in the Rink night at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA. Pink in the Rink benefits the Cup Crusaders; a team that raises money and awareness for the Susan G. Komen 3 day walk. The Sharks beat the Pirates 5-2 on Sunday, all while raising money for a great cause.

With the theme being Pink in the Rink; the Sharks did not disappoint. Photos can be seen below; with many thanks going to Chris O’Shea of the Sharks Booster Club for sending them along. [portfolio_slideshow]

This week’s terms are Dump and Chase, Chirp and Crosscheck.

Dump and Chase: Dump and Chase is an offensive hockey play. The premise of the play is to dump the puck into the offensive zone. Then aggressively chase the puck in hopes of gaining possession to set up a scoring chance. Although not exciting and often regarded as boring it can be quite effective for a team with offensive speed and defensive size.

Chirp: Although a chirp can be considered joking around, in today’s NHL a chirp is generally considered trash talking. Chirping usually takes play just prior or post a fight.

Crosscheck: A crosscheck is when a player hits another with the shaft of their hockey stick while holding it with two hands, usually positioning the stick horizontally. A crosscheck is an illegal move in hockey. Most often punishable by a minor penalty; although on occasion if sever a major penalty can be given.

This weekend marks the theater release of Star Wars in 3-D. I’ll openly admit to being a nerd for knowing this, in part because my little 6 year old brother lives and breathes everything Star Wars. Who knew that hockey and Star Wars go so well together? Apparently a lot of people.

The original goalie; Darth Vadar has been rocking the hockey helmet for years now, Storm Troopers blend with the ice and that Princess Lea’s hair resembles pucks throughout most of the movies.

Star Wars + Hockey; may the force be with you!

This week its back to the western conference; the Kings are up. With this look, I thought I would play into the colour scheme of royalty. They are the Kings right? Purple and gold seem to be notoriously associated with royalty; I heavily played upon those two for this look. I know the Kings do not have gold in their logo but a little fashion rebellion every now and again never hurt anyone.

The Kings element is not only brought into this via the obvious shirt, but also with the smaller details like lapel pins. Pair this with a forever fashionable leopard print cardigan and a good faux-leather jacket and you’re good to go. Just like always if you don’t have something here don’t sweat just use what you have, this look is just a guideline. If you love this look and aren’t a kings fan just swap out the Kings stuff to fit your teams colours and logo. Hope you enjoyed it.

Go Kings.

The road hasn’t been an easy one for the Boston Bruins and for another spell this season they’re stuck fighting their way to the top. With the losses piling up and most notably a 6-0 loss suffered on Wednesday night against the Buffalo Sabres.

“I thought we started well, but it went from good to bad to worse” commented Bruins Coach Claude Julien, “Right now it’s about righting the ship with some better play from everybody”.

There are so many lines, circles and trapezoids all over the rink, have you ever sat back and wondered what the purpose of all these were? Well I am here to inform you of their purposes, with diagrams too. This will be a two part series explaining all writings on the rink. In this edition the lines on the ice will be explained. As you can see on the diagram below there are 5 major lines on any regulation NHL rink.
