As of late the San Jose Sharks haven’t been playing to the best of their potential. The Sharks who seem to always be in the playoff race have currently fallen out of contention.

The Bruins looked to go into their 3 game west coast tilt strong and take a win. That just didn’t happen for Boston who’s lone goal came at the stick of Captain Zdeno Chara. The Sharks had goals from Joe Pavelski and Daniel Winnik.

The Bruins will look to change the road loss game, having lost their 4th straight on the road, when they head to SoCal to take on the Los Angeles Kings Saturday and Anaheim Ducks on Sunday before heading back east.

After a disappointing stint on the road, Toronto returned home only to flop to the Islanders 5-2 Tuesday night.

Phil Kessel and Matthew Lombardi both scored for the Leafs a day after their worst performance this season, losing Monday to Boston 8-0. Toronto has now lost seven of their last nine.

The game was tied 2-2 heading into the third but a powerplay goal by Matt Moulson gave New York the advantage. Less than two minutes later a Leaf offensive turnover sent P.A. Parenteau on the breakaway beating James Reimer and adding to the Islanders’ lead. An empty-net goal by Moulson sealed Toronto’s fate.

Reimer had 29 saves in the loss. The Leafs only shot 14 times on goal.

Last May, I spent two wonderful weeks couch-hopping my way around the Greater Toronto Area. I ate my weight in poutine and Timmies, shopped at some adorable boutiques, and, most notably, touched Lord Stanley’s Cup. It was a surreal experience, really; standing in the middle of a room at the Hockey Hall of Fame, my hand placed gently on something worth more than any possession or memory I’ve ever owned. I thought about all of the legends who’d placed their hands in the same place my left hand was. The Great One, Yzerman, Orr… and then, a terrible thought checked me into the proverbial boards.

“Did you just jinx the Red Wings?”

With a consistent friendly personality in the locker room, Bruins Johnny Boychuk is a favorite among the media and his teammates. Perhaps the same can’t be said from players on the receiving end of his notorious one timers. On the ice, Boychuk is a defensive force to be reckoned with and his physicality proves him a key player in the Boston organization. Boychuk’s consistent play earned him a 3 year contract extension back in February. Boychuk has posted 5 goals, 10 assists and currently has a +/- 24 on the season.

The Boston Bruins were back in playoff form tonight when they took the ice against Toronto. The outcome for Boston was much brighter than Toronto with the Bruins netting 8 goals 4 of which came in the first period.

It was a night where everything just worked in the black and gold’s favor. With everyone commenting on the Bruins domination this evening it’s smart to point out that less than a week ago the Bruins held the same fate giving up 12 goals in 2 games during a Florida road trip.

Not only did the Bruins beat the Flyers 3-2 in a shootout and break their 4 game losing streak; but they re-signed resident tough guy Shawn Thornton to a 2 year contract extension worth 1.1M a year. Not a bad way to ring in St. Patrick’s Day in Beantown for the on ice resident tough guy and fan favorite.

Lots of games around the league today; including the Philadelphia Flyers vs. Boston Bruins at 1pm. It might take more than the luck of the Irish to get them there again this season, but here’s a photo of the beer of choice back in 1972.

Dye Babe

This St Patrick’s day, raise a pint of cheer to NHL nostalgia. Before The Maple Leafs were the boys in blue the Toronto squad wore green. The St Pats emerged in the 1919-20 NHL season with manager Charlie Querrie at the helm. Toronto’s green and white jerseys paid homage to Ireland while their ordained name was chosen to entice the city’s large Irish population in an attempt to draw them in droves to home games. Two years later, the St Pats found their pot of gold, defeating the Vancouver Millionaires for the 1921-22 Stanley Cup. Star Pat, Babe Dye, acted as an emerald lucky clover scoring nine goals in just five games during the series. In February 1927, the Toronto St Pats were purchased by ex-Rangers owner Conn Smythe. Smythe, a military man, renamed his team after a World War I fighting unit, the Maple Leaf Regiment. The team colours were changed from green and white to the more familiar blue and white.

Now if only the contemporary club could some how channel the old-school luck of the Irish…

It doesn’t matter which league you play for NHL or AHL; lately, if you wear a black and gold sweater you just can’t get it done.

The NHL Bruins have lost 4 straight, with a precursor of losses before that. Just last night the AHL Bruins lost 5-2 against Worcester Sharks. The game adds to an ever growing tally of losses for Providence, having won only 1 game in the last 9. Although a good majority of the losses have come at a fairly close goal deficit. Providence is looking for a little bit of luck to turn the remainder of the season around. They’ll take on Springfield Falcons at 4:05pm tomorrow March 18th.

James Reimer stopped 34 shots Thursday night to help the Leafs end a five game losing streak with a 3-1 win in Tampa.

John-Michael Liles, Joey Crabb and Jake Gardiner all scored to edge out the Lighting and move the Leafs within eight points of Washington.  Liles put the Leafs up early with a powerplay goal at 1:09 in the first. Toronto added two more in the second with Crabb scoring early in the period. Gardiner’s quick wrist-short sealed the deal making it 3-0; Matthew Lombardi assisted in both goals. Tampa’s Martin St-Louis ended Reimer’s shut-out with 26 seconds left in the third. The loss keeps Tampa in eleventh in the East, seven points behind the Capitals.

Toronto is 3-13-2 in the last 18 games and heads to Ottawa Saturday night.
