Saturday saw three of four games in OT. Here’s what the race for the cup looked like this weekend:
Caps bruise Bruins
Nicklas Backstrom scored in double overtime to give Washington the victory 2-1 over Boston. With the win, the Capitals tie the series one a piece and head to Washington for game three on Monday.
Senators beat NY
The Senators tied the series Saturday with a 3-2 OT win against the Rangers. The win however came at a price; captain Daniel Alfredsson left the game in the second after NY’s Carl Hagelin smashed his head into the glass. Hagelin is expected to have a hearing in front of the board on Sunday. The Sens’ quest continues Monday in Ottawa.
Blues take Sharks
St. Louis scored one in each period to even the series with San Jose. Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott teamed up to make 29 saves in the win. Halak left the game in the second after a collision with teammate Barret Jackman. Game three heads to San Jose Monday night.
Blackhawks over Coyotes
Chicago ties the series with their overtime win in Arizona. A late Chicago goal in the third sent the game into OT where the Blackhawks’ Brian Bickell scored for the victory. The two meet again in Chi Town Tuesday night for game three.
The race for the cup was riddled with goals Friday night. In the end, a total of 29 marked an exciting day 3. Here’s what happened:
New Jersey over Panthers
The Devils took game one from Florida 3-2. Even Martin Brodeur was credited with an assist in this match up! New Jersey came out early in this one with three in the first and, despite Florida’s two goal answer in the second, stayed on top. Devils lead the series 1-0.
Flying high in Philly
Wow…a total of 13 goals in the battle of Pennsylvania. Pens shot out of the gate early with Sidney Crosby’s second goal of the series just 15 seconds in. The Flyers crushed the second and third period tallying seven goals. Claude Giroux scored a hat trick in the win. Philly leads the Pens by two games.
Wings take Preds
Detroit, with the help of goaltender Jimmy Howard, came out on top beating Nashville 3-2. Howard made 24 saves in the win. Detroit ties the series and heads back home for game three.
LA is king
A pair of shorthanded goals lifted the Kings over Vancouver. LA takes game two 4-2 and lead the series two games to none. The Canucks travel to Los Angeles for game three on Sunday night.
Playoff hockey never disappoints. And with three out of four games going into OT, it was definitely an exciting Thursday. In case you missed the action, here’s a brief recap:
Rangers rough up Sens
The Eastern top seed Rangers took game one against Ottawa in New York. Henrik Lundqvist’s 30 saves lead to the Rangers’ 4-2 win at home. New York is on the hunt for their first playoff series win since 2008. The two meet again Saturday night.
Sharks bite Blues
San Jose came out on top of double overtime versus St. Louis. Martin Havlat scored the game winner to take the Blues 3-2. The Sharks lead the series and play again in St. Louis Saturday night.
Boston beats Caps
Boston scored the lone goal in overtime for a 1-0 win over Washington. Tim Thomas was named third star in the winning effort making 17 saves and recording his sixth career playoff shutout.
Coyotes fall to Blackhawks
Marin Hanzal scored in overtime for Phoenix to take game one against Chigago. The Blackhawks scored with seconds
Last night the Bruins took Game 1 in an OT win against the Capitals. While the Bruins celebrated their victory, a pane of glass fell and hit forward David Krejci, knocking him to the ice. According to Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli, Krejci is listed day to day. Despite the bizarre incident, Krejci told media that he thinks he will play tomorrow.

It was a crazy night one in the NHL race for the cup. Here’s a quick recap:
Philly takes Pittsburgh in OT
Flyers crawled back from a 3 goal deficit to beat the Penguins 4- 3 in overtime at the CONSOL Energy Center. Sidney Crosby opened the scoring valve for Pittsburgh early in the first, marking his 31st playoff goal. Philly stuck with “bear down” goalie Ilya Bryzgalov despite allowing three goals on 13 shots. The Pens were silenced after the first as Bryzgalov settled down with 25 saves in the win. “The come-back kids” Flyers flourished in the second and third and, thanks in part to some questionable calls, sent the game into OT. Jakub Voracek topped the rally with his game winning goal 2:23 in OT.
Music City over Motown
Nashville’s home win over Detroit gives them game 1 of the West quarterfinals. Pekka Rinne made 35 stops in the Pred’s 3-2 victory. In this back and forth game, Rinne was stellar as predicted through regular season play. The two teams meet again Friday.
Kings can Canucks
For the second time in three years, the Los Angeles Kings and the Vancouver Canucks are meeting in the first round of playoffs and last night’s game went to the Kings. Dustin Penner scored the game winner for LA who, with an added empty netter, defeated Vancouver 4-2 at the Rogers Arena. Jonathan Quick tallied 24 saves (majority near the end of the third) in LA’s win.
