Bobby Orr sealed the Stanley Cup for the Boston Bruins with his OT goal beating the St. Louis Blues 4-3. The image of Orr with his hands outstretched and flying through the air in celebration has become not only synonymous with Boston sports, but possibly one of the most recognizable hockey moments in history.

The New Jersey Devils knocked out Philly last night and advance to the Eastern conference finals for the first time in nine years. Martin Broduer made 27 saves in the 3-1 win while Ilya Kovalchuk recorded a goal and an assist. Philly appeared to be missing two of their key players; Claude Giroux was Shannabanned from the game while an empty Ilya Bryzgalov let in the lack lustre go-ahead goal on a failed clear. NJD wins the series 4-1 and awaits their match-up in the final.

Rangers and Caps
Brad Richards scored the tying goal late in the third to throw Game 5 into overtime. Unlike their last extra period play, New York finished it quickly with Marc Stall scoring 1:35 into OT to win 3-2 at Madison Square Garden. Washington’s Joel Ward was given a double-minor for high sticking with 21.3 seconds left to play in regulation giving the Rangers a 6-on-4 after pulling Lundqvist. The man-power allowed Richards to score and ultimately led the Rangers to a 3-2 series lead. Braden Holtby stopped 35 shots in the Caps’ loss. New York can close it out in Washington; Game 6 takes place in on Wednesday.
Phoenix advances
For the first time in franchise history Phoenix is heading to the Western Conference finals. The Coyotes defeated the Predators 2-1 on Monday night to take the series 4-1. Mike Smith recorded 32 saves in the win for the Coyotes who now face the LA Kings in the finals.

Kings advance
For the first time in the same playoff year the No. 8 seed knocked out both the first and second to advance to the finals. LA beat the Blues 3-1 to sweep the series and become the first team to advance to round three. Dustin Brown was on fire for the Kings scoring both the go-ahead goal and an empty-netter while Jonathan Quick made 23 saves in the victory. St. Louis only had six goals on Quick this series. It is the first time since 1993 for LA in the conference finals and the first franchise series sweep. The favoured Kings, who took down #1 and #2 in nine games, will play either Phoenix or Nashville in the West.
New Jersey celebrates
What’s better than playing hockey on your birthday?? – Winning a game on your birthday. Martin Brodeur’s 40th is one to remember for the future Hall of Famer who served up some Devil’s cake to the Flyers with 20 saves and an assist in NJ’s 4-2 win. The pair heads to Philly on Tuesday where the Flyers will try to battle back from a 3-1 series deficit.

Claude Giroux will speak to Brendan Shanahan this morning at 11 am following his hit to the head of Dainius Zubrus. It’s unclear if the hit was intentional, but Giroux served a 2 minute minor penalty for an illegal hit to the head during Game 4 last night.

Although Giroux’s fate is uncertain, one fact is; if Giroux receives a suspension it’ll be a huge hit to the Flyers. Giroux has had an incredible season this year, and has continued the pace right through the playoffs. With 8 goals, 9 assists and 17 points in the playoffs alone, it’s easy to place high expectations on Giroux. The Flyers now face elimination when Game 5 rolls into Philadelphia on Tuesday evening and it’s a safe guess that most of Flyers Nation is anxiously awaiting the outcome of their most productive player.

Update: Giroux has been suspended 1 game, a game in which his team will face elimination. Watch Shanahan’s explanation here: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=630913&cmpid=nhl-rxl-twt

Pouch and Card Holder

Card Holder

With an influx of hockey papers, pictures and magazines, how do you re-use the memorabilia you’ve collected throughout the season. A hockey bag, purse or gym bag can become a disaster pretty quickly and this weeks project can help with that. The larger pouch easily fits chapstick, bobby pins, tissues, hair elastics, and the 50 other little things that collect in your various bags. The project is supposed to be a clutch and you could certainly make one; although the sizing can easily be modified to make a pouch that fits your needs.

Caps Prevail!
The goals totaled 5 on the 5th May as the Caps celebrated Cinco de Mayo in formidable fashion winning 3-2 over the Rangers in Washington. Coming off their triple overtime loss, Washington pushed through outshooting New York in the first period 14-3. Braden Holtby, who hasn’t lost back to back starts since last season, made 18 saves in the win. Alex Ovechkin’s limited ice-time has proved profitable; OV grabbed the first goal of the game for the Caps. The teams head to New York Monday for Game 5 at Madison Square Garden.

Coyotes win in Music City
Mike Smith recorded his second shutout of the playoffs in Phoenix’s 1-0 win over Nashville. The Coyotes offence failed to step up playing minus Radulov and Kostitsyn for a second game. Shane Doan scored the only goal for Phoenix, who lead the series 3-1. The Coyotes can finish it Monday in Arizona.
