You love your favorite NHL team, but sometimes it isn’t cost efficient to be a season ticket holder from anywhere beyond your couch. Sure, in a perfect world you would be center ice at every game, but the world isn’t always perfect… if it was your team would hoist the cup every single season.
Sometimes a more cost efficient and enjoyable alternative to the big show is to catch a game with the farm team; the NHL has both AHL and ECHL affiliates. These games are full of grit and passion. You’ll find players fighting for the opportunity to advance to the next level, instead of players who already have. Maybe the affiliate for your favorite team isn’t close to you, it’s okay to support the one that is! So this season, take your family, take your friends or take yourself to an AHL or ECHL game for the same amount of fun at a more cost effective price.
What’s Bruin in Boston so far this week?
Coach Claude Julien signed a multi-year contract extension with Boston on Monday.
“I’m extremely happy to remain here in Boston,” said Julien. “Love the organization, love the city.” The city clearly has a love for the coach that was instrumental in bringing the Stanley Cup back to Boston after so many years. “Now my goal is to win another Cup for this Boston franchise” commented Julien, “I remain hungry.”
While the jersey color scheme remains the same, the zip code will not. After months of speculation, Rick Nash has been dealt to the NY Rangers. A topic of conversation since well before the trade deadline in February, Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson finally made a move on Monday.
Per the NHL: “In a deal that has been brewing since February, the Columbus Blue Jackets dealt their captain to the Rangers on Monday along with defenseman Steven Delisle and a conditional third-round selection in the 2013 Entry Draft in exchange for forwards Brandon Dubinsky and Artem Anisimov, defenseman Tim Erixon and the Rangers’ first-round selection in the 2013 Draft.”
Nash, a 28 year-old, 6-4″, 219 lb, left winger has a high market value when it comes to his ability to score on the ice. After a somewhat lackluster 2011-12 season, with Columbus, a new team brings new opportunity for the now former Columbus captain. Nash could prove to be quite the asset in a city with a higher hockey market; playing for a team with an almost guaranteed opportunity for playoff contention. It will certainly be interesting to see if the bright lights of the big apple will help this NHL star finally shine.

Jessica Redfield (photo from @JessicaRedfield twitter account)
By now many of you have heard about the senseless shooting in Aurora, Colorado during the midnight premiere of “Dark Knight Rises”; claiming the lives of 12 people and injuring dozens of others. One of the lives lost, fellow hockey writer Jessica (Redfield) Ghawi. NHL Network correspondent Kathryn Tappen (@kathryntappen) posted the follow tweet “In honor of a beautiful young woman, @JessicaRedfield and the tragedy in Colorado: http://shesgamesports.com/jessica-redfield-ghawi-a-true-champion/ … #RIPJessica #AuroraShooting“.
The posting albeit brief, is a touching tribute to a fellow sports journalist, “Jessica never got to finish the job she began. But she opened the door to so many others who will now follow in her footsteps,” writes Tappen. “That, in my eyes, is a true champion.”
Although one of the more recognizable names, Tappen isn’t the only writer to reflect on the tragedy and the loss of a colleague. Other reflections from Alice Cook, Tanya Ray Fox, and Arielle Aronson can also be read on She’s Game Sports.
14 years, $100 million… that’s the offer sheet Philadelphia put on the table in an attempt to beef up a lacking defensive roster. The Flyers made the offer to current Predator Shea Weber, one of the top defensemen in the league. Nashville has the opportunity to match the offer, but if they pass, Weber will be suiting up for the Flyers come October. With impressive statistics this past season, Weber was ranked one of the top three defensemen in the league; gaining him a Norris Trophy nomination at this years NHL Awards. Weber lost out to Senators Erik Karlsson in one of the largest upsets of the evening. Karlsson inked a hefty deal back on June 19th which extended his residency with Ottawa.
During media day at the awards, Weber seemed unsure about his future with the Predators. With the departure of Ryan Suter earlier this month in a huge deal with Minnesota, the Flyers offer and Weber’s acceptance didn’t come as much of a surprise. While the deal is signed and sealed, it’s yet to be delivered.
Video from Weber during media day at the NHL Awards, he briefly touches base on Suter and his own contract negotiations.

Birthday wishes (Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag) are in order for Boston Bruins defensemen Dennis Seidenberg.

Also blowing out the candles, RFA Jamie Benn of the Dallas Stars. While no new reports have surfaced regarding contract negotiations, Benn certainly has both the on and off-ice skills to become a long term franchise player for Dallas. Perhaps the organization will give him the gift of a substantial contract to celebrate the day.
After the dust has settled and maybe after the Devils management got to him Cam Janssen has issued an apology on the Devils website. The apology reads as follows:
“Earlier this week, I participated in an internet-based radio show in which I used some poor judgment which I now regret. The New Jersey Devils were unaware of this interview, which I arranged myself,” Janssen continued.
“I would like to apologize for my poor choice of language. The tone of the interview was very casual and off-color, and I lost focus on what is and is not acceptable and professional. I am deeply sorry to anyone who was offended by my language. Moving forward, I hope to eliminate that type of language from my vocabulary. I would also like to take this chance to express my support for the work the You Can Play project is doing, and for the gay community in general.
“I apologize for the embarrassment my comments have caused to the New Jersey Devils management, as well as my teammates.”
What do you guys think? Sincere apology or the powers that be got to him? Let us know in the comments.

Cam Janssen
Cam Janssen has never been known as the classiest guy in the NHL and he will probably never win the Lady Bing. However Janssen has hit an all-time low this week with homophobic and sexist comments he made on the Thom and Jeff show a podcast in his home city St.Louis. The comments did not stop at homophobia and sexism; Janssen also commented on intentionally hurting players.
These comments have caused an outrage on the internet be it from those offended by the comments or those very select few that came out in support of Janssen. Here is a look at the comments that prompted all of this outrage.
Warning the comments may offend some:
This week there is a younger spin of the team look. This look is for our younger reader or Moms looking to dress their daughters in cute, fashionable hockey related clothing. The team highlighted this week would be the classiest organization in the league, the Detroit Red Wings.
This look isn’t a Red Wings overload, it allows for the wearer to look pretty without looking like she is tailgating. The subtle Red Wings hints with the wristlet bag, the jewelry and pins for the cardigan (If the wearer is old enough) show support for the Red Wings. As per usual the colour scheme was kept Red Wings focused. This look can work for any young girl regardless of her age group she will look cute and chic while supporting her favourite team.
If you like this look and want more let us know in the comments or via email. Just like always if you don’t have something here don’t sweat just use what you have, this look is just a guideline. If you love this look and aren’t a Red Wings fan just swap out the Red Wings stuff to fit your team colours and logo. Hope you enjoyed it.

NHL Free Agency, it’s almost comparable to walking down the game aisle at your local toy store. With Monopoly and Risk being the NHL board game equivalents, every team plays, not every team wins. In Monopoly you strive to be the tycoon, the one player that has the most money and the most real estate; during free agency the Minnesota Wild could be named the ultimate tycoon. With money on the board (approx. $196 million), Minnesota became the ultimate free agency tycoon; landing both Zach Parise and Ryan Suter.
