You Can Play’s Burke, Bruins Ference
Nowadays, one tweet can start a flutter and that’s exactly what happened for You Can Play’s (@YouCanPlayTeam) co-founder Patrick Burke (@BurkieYCP) on Monday. Burke was invited to join Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference (@Ferknuckle) for a brisk 7 mile bike ride, followed by a stair run at Harvard Stadium. The stair portion of the training regime is powered by the November Project (@Nov_Project); a grassroots campaign to support one another as athletes and train for a whopping $0.
While Burke declined to bike to the event, he did offer to participate pending his Twitter followers donate $500 to You Can Play. Pledges tweeted in at a rapid rate Monday evening; raising upwards of $2,500, with a donation from Ference himself.
A man of his word, Burke took to the stadium at 6:30 am with a mixed group of previous climbers and new additions such as himself. The premise of the November Project is to have fun, even when you’re faced with an NHL training partner. The morning was built around support and positivity, with a “pep talk” to calm nerves at the first step and a cheering squad of fellow participants at the last. It wasn’t a competition, but a moment of equality between athletes, no matter what level you compete at.
Ference is yet another NHL player lending a glove to a growing roster of supporters throughout the league. It’s safe to say, You Can Play has garnered the support of the NHL community, and neighboring sports in a big way.
In a continued effort to spread the message “If you can play, you can play”, Burke certainly rose to the challenge. Raising money and awareness, in this case a few thousand stairs at a time.

The Boston Bruins announced today that they have signed forward Tyler Seguin to a 6-year contract extension; putting him in the black and gold through the 2018-19 season. “Part of this business is projecting” said Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli, “we’re projecting Tyler to be a terrific young player.”
“I’m a Bruin” said Seguin, “I’m happy to be a part of this group of guys.” Seguin will earn 5.75 million annually over the course of the deal. Drafted by Boston 2nd overall in the 2010 NHL Draft, Seguin won the Stanley Cup in 2011 during his rookie year.
Despite achieving such goals at a young age, it’s been full speed ahead for the 6’1″ Brampton, Ontario native, with no signs of slowing down. A long contract, comes with a lot of responsibility, responsibility that Seguin is looking forward to proving both on and off the ice. With a stable group of teammates to look up to, support for the young forward ranks high throughout the team. It began with now retired Mark Recchi lending his support to a rookie Seguin from the start. With Recchi out of the locker room, Seguin has begun to mold his actions around those of Patrice Bergeron. “He’s my line mate” said Seguin “but he’s my role model.”
For Boston, it’s about locking up the core players in the organization. Seguin’s deal comes just days after the announcement of Brad Marchand’s 4-year extension. Both extensions fall just days before the CBA is set to expire on September 15th.
Living a healthy lifestyle off the ice is important. Good food choices and exercise are key ingredients in prolonged on ice success, but occasionally a little treat makes all the difference. Hockey players know how to party, and for women, the dessert table is a team favorite. A few months ago, I attended an end of the season party and watched one of my teammates stare longingly at the dessert table; yet not partaking. Later I found out that she has a variety of allergies, eggs and dairy included. That being said, when I received an invite to our hockey-centric cookout this past weekend, I decided to do what a hockey player does best and help a teammate in need by making a dessert that everyone could enjoy.

Hockey players are no strangers to helping their community through various charitable endeavors; they also frequent the links. Hockey and golf go glove in glove, it’s often a close second to the ice for most of your NHL favorites. The Boston Bruins are no different as they convened for the first official time this season at The International Golf Club and Resort in Bolton, MA; for the 9th Annual Boston Bruins Golf Tournament. The tournament similar to many other events during the season, benefited the Boston Bruins Foundation and the Boston Bruins Alumni Association. The Bruins Foundation is one of the strongest in the league, with continued efforts throughout the year that strive to help a variety of charities.
Following an extensive off-season, after facing 1st round playoff elimination back in May; the Bruins were ready to look ahead to the coming season and like fans are hopeful for the puck to drop on time come October. Lockout talk was inevitable before hitting the links and the players on hand were open to discussing the possibility of a delay of game.

While the upcoming season is in the air, players will weigh their on ice options if they have to come September 15th. Bruins NHLPA team rep Daniel Paille has been a constant source of information for his teammates, attending both meetings and sitting in on calls throughout the entire process this summer. David Krejci would opt to skate on a team back in Czech, while goaltender Tuukka Rask would opt out of heading back to Finland. Not ideal in terms of wanting to excel on NHL ice; newcomer Torey Krug would welcome the opportunity to skate and develop more with the AHL affiliate Providence Bruins.
“I’m prepared for whatever they need me to do” said Krug, “I’ll go down there, work as hard as I can and keep trying to get better.”

Bruins Tyler Seguin
Tyler Seguin could perhaps take the same route, but it’s not an option that’s fully on the table quite yet or something that the young forward has begun to think about.
“I want to be playing hockey NHL first, I thought about playing AHL” said Seguin, “thought about going overseas, nothing firm right now.”
The idea of a delayed season is at the forefront of everyone’s mind, but the possibility of players hitting the ice on schedule is also in the playbook. “Right now” said Coach Julien, “my preparation is for the 21st.”
Players in attendance for today’s tournament; David Krejci, Shawn Thornton, Rich Peverley, Daniel Paille, Torey Krug, Patrice Bergeron, Johnny Boychuk, Milan Lucic, Tyler Seguin, Andrew Ference, Anton Khudobin, Dennis Seidenberg, Tuukka Rask and Chris Bourque. It’s important to mention that some other Bruins notables had prior commitments and were unable to attend.

The beauties over at Wheels Hockey featured our article Pro’s Choice: One Mask at a Time. Whether you’re a fan or lace up goalie skates yourself, it’s worth the read!
As the NFL kicks off, I got to thinking, is it possible to equally love more than one sport? Or will one always take center ice? Of course, your heart is big enough to love two things equally, but that’s reserved for kids, dogs, flavors of ice cream, etc. Loving two different sports equally, is that even possible? Obviously, I can’t speak for the rest of the sports loving nation out there, but as much as I love my hometown teams and my heart holds a soft spot for football and lacrosse; hockey holds the key to my heart.
While Sunday is reserved for football, it’s a sport that fills the void when any NHL team isn’t gracing the ice. But rest assured that the days where the Bruins and Patriots overlap, the Bruins will win out every time. Luckily, the NHL rarely plays on Sunday and the NFL rarely plays on any other day of the week, Monday nights excluded. Football and hockey, two sports that are a perfect collaboration for the everyday fans viewing schedule. Perhaps it isn’t a coincidence that the two superior sports run in the same circle of fans.
The two leagues make it easy to be the recipient of equal love, but just because it’s easy doesn’t mean that the average fan will dole out equal pieces of their heart. With the impending possibility of an NHL lockout looming, football has taken on a new level of love in my heart. While I’ve watched the games religiously before, I’m no bandwagon fan. I’ve found myself ridden with more questions about the game and a heightened interest in everything on the field. While I’d love to be a versatile fan and supporter of the NFL, it just isn’t that easy. As the two sports run parallel in terms of season, perhaps the NHL will follow in the NFL’s cleats and come to a deal at the last minute. It’s a hope for any hockey fan left counting the days until doomsday.
Moral of the story, hockey is always at the forecheck of my mind. While the NHL may lockout of my viewing schedule, hockey certainly won’t be locking out of my heart; but the NFL may be breaking in.
It’s been a relatively quiet summer for the Boston Bruins on the transactions front. But there is no time like the present to start inking deals for the black and gold. Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli did just that, signing goaltender Malcom Subban to an entry-level contract. Subban was drafted 24th-overall at the 2012 NHL Draft, raising chatter among Boston faithful due to his somewhat notorious last name. For those of you unfamiliar, Subban’s brother P.K. has had quite the history with Boston while playing for the Montreal Canadiens.
One player in specific that hasn’t necessarily been a fan of P.K. Subban throughout the seasons; Bruins Brad Marchand. The two have had on ice history, one hit in particular that started the “bad blood”:

Hits aside, Marchand brings quite the presence to the Bruins locker room; a presence that will remain in Boston for at least another 4 seasons. It was announced today that Marchand was signed to a 4-year, $4.5M annually contract extension. If the Bruins capture another cup during that time, perhaps fans will get to see Marchand gracing the stage while rapping this beauty: [tubepress video=”3u8yRDkdJOE”]
In honour of Gabriel Landeskog becoming the youngest captain in NHL history (beating out Sid the Kid by 11 days ) The team look of the week goes out to the Colorado Avalanche. This look does a mix and match of a lot of the trends for fall 2012. Colour blocking seems to be a trend that is not going anywhere; luckily that comes in handy when trying to dress for your favourite hockey team. With this look the ever so chick peplum top is colour blocked with a skinny jean, this is a simple, comfortable yet chic look. This outfit is paired with a chunky knit cardigan, a popular trend for fall 2012. The Jeffery Campbell Lita shoes are also very popular. They have been taking the shoe world by storm for a few months now and don’t appear to be going anywhere.
Just like always if you don’t have something here don’t sweat just use what you have, this look is just a guideline. If you love this look and aren’t an Islanders fan just swap out the Islanders stuff to fit your team colours and logo. Hope you enjoyed it.
The Boston University hockey team has a positive reputation on the ice, but has fallen under a lot of scrutiny off of it. Hockey players often get a bad wrap when it comes to sexual accusations made against them and BU is no different. After two sexual assault charges surfaced last March, Boston University was forced to investigate the claims and it’s team. How many other teams will undergo a similar treatment, when it comes to their athletes? Here’s an interesting read about the task force and it’s findings: Hockey Task Force Find Oversight Deficiencies, Culture of Entitlement.
One of the two Green Men, Sully, has been awarded the ultimate fan honour being inducted into the ESPN Hall of Fans. His partner in crime, Force, did not make the cut. Maybe Force will be inducted sooner than Pavel Bure. It’s definitely worth looking up the duo, you have not caught a glimpse of the Green Men on numerous Vancouver Canucks highlights.
Here are Sully’s thoughts on their claim to fame:
In 2009, we attended a Vancouver Canucks game in a pair of one piece green suits. It was supposed to be a one time thing and it turned in to a piece of sports pop culture. We have accumulated a great record throughout our 50+ games beside the visitor’s penalty box. Our goal has always been to distract the opposition while getting our fans pumped. Our efforts have landed us on ESPN countless times, including numerous Top Ten lists, PTI, Around The Horn, First Take and many more. Once our popularity grew in the sports world we were able to raise over $15,000 for various charities. As super fans we have followed our team to Nashville, Phoenix, and Boston. Even the Canucks players have acknowledged our contribution to the team. We feel we are “HallOfFan” worthy because of our impact on fans in sports. Since our inception, fans from around the world have donned the suits. They even attempt handstands from time to time. A trip to the Hall would be the sweet icing on our green spandex cake.
Congratulations to the Hall of Fans inaugural class – Emily P (University of Alabama), Larry H (Baltimore Ravens) and Sully O (Vancouver Canucks)!
