With hockey depression at an all time high, many fans hit arenas of a smaller scale for the opening evening of the American Hockey League. One of those teams, the Providence Bruins had the  benefit of beginning the season on home ice. Home ice and the first to score, Providence began the season with the strong consistent play that they lacked at last seasons end.

Lately, there has been chatter aplenty for center Ryan Spooner, who proved that a summer of hard work can quickly pay off when the season is back in session. Spooner has been a target for anticipated success; tallying an assist in the first goal of the evening.

Coming off a 2 game NHL stint last season and an impressive collegiate career, the name Krug is synonymous with high expectations. Having won the approval of both fans and coaches, Krug is one of the most anticipated Providence Bruins to hit the ice. From a scouting perspective, Krug may need to work harder than expected to earn approval in the grand scheme of things.

“Krug, a dynamic little offensive guy, good on the power play,” commented an NHL scout whom requested to remain anonymous. “Questions going to be, he’s a 5’9″ d-man, and there aren’t many of those guys who play.”

For now, Krug is proving to be a positive addition for Providence.

After it’s success in 2011, the IIHF has turned Girls Hockey Day into an entire weekend. The amount of female interest in the game is constantly growing, and this weekend rinks across the world open their doors to girls who want to get on the ice.

“It is an opportunity for girls of all ages to try ice hockey. We are looking for hosts all around the world to bring girls from their community together on the ice so they can: Be introduced to basic skills in hockey in a positive, fun and safe environment. Learn about opportunities in ice hockey in their community. Learn about fair play, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Meet new friends and have a chance to fall in love with a new sport,” via the IIHF.

Any entire weekend dedicated to the other gender that is often overlooked when it comes to the sport, no one can argue the positive aspects of that! Check out the IIHF tracker, with photos and updates from around the world.

With the NHL lockout the team look of the week will be for an AHL team. Just because the NHL is locked out does not mean you have to quit watching hockey. The team for this week is the Washington Capitals AHL affiliate the Hershey Bears.

This look combines many trends for fall 2012. Burgundy, deep red or purple pants are very hot this season. Although they are coloured pants they are not too bright which makes them slightly more wearable. A blazer is forever classic you can never go wrong with a blazer. To add a feminine element to this look the Peter Pan collar necklace was added. Not only does this add a feminine air but it also dresses the Hershey Bears t-shirt up.

Just like always if you don’t have something here don’t sweat just use what you have, this look is just a guideline. If you love this look and aren’t a Bears fan just swap out the Bears stuff to fit your team colours and logo. Hope you enjoyed it.

Have you ever wondered the history behind the name of your favorite team? Take the Toronto Maple Leafs for example:
When Conn Smythe purchased the Toronto club in 1927, he set about renaming the team. Originally, the franchise began play as the Arenas in 1917 as they were owned by the Arena Company and played in the Arena Gardens. The club then changed to the St. Patricks in 1919 to attract Toronto’s Irish population. Smythe eventually decided on Maple Leafs, but the specific reason why is uncertain. Smythe fought in the Maple Leaf Regiment during World War I, and there was a former Toronto hockey team called the East Maple Leaves. Another version perpetuated by Smythe’s grandson states that Conn named the team after the Maple Leaf insignia he had worn during the First World War.”

The Providence Bruins held practice as usual today, with a much deserved twist. After a strenuous training camp, the team participated in drills, but spent a good portion of the 2 hour ice time joking and enjoying the low key practice.  The final roster has been dealt and the team will open the season against the Manchester Monarchs tomorrow night.

With development at the forefront of the club, the coaching staff anticipates a better start this season. Of course, high expectations for the club and it’s members  will be a factor in it’s continued on ice success. One of those expectations will be falling heavily on new addition Chris Bourque. With a seasoned history of power play success, Coach Cassidy openly expressed his interest in Bourque’s power play abilities. Other Bruins who will heavily factor into the power play this season, David Warsofsky, Craig Cunningham and Carter Camper.

Although the puck has yet to drop, the hopes of a playoff run have taken residency in the locker room.
“Once you’re in, you have a chance to win,” said Cassidy.

Here at The Pink Puck, we come across hockey articles everyday- it’s a refreshing change to read something unrelated to the lockout. In an attempt to clear the ice and add variety to the daily grind, we thought it would be nice to share articles from other media outlets that we found interesting; because who knows, you may too!

While some people were enjoying the holiday today, Thanksgiving in Canada and Columbus Day in the States, the Worcester Sharks were hard at work with the end of training camp soon approaching. Players hit the ice at New England Sports Center with varied drills, scrimmages and exercises. With the vast majority of practice being all work, it’s important to note that in a positive move by Head Coach Roy Sommers, a little play was mixed in too. The team was in great spirits as they participated in scrimmages and joked with each other. Skating hard is important, but it’s moments like those that often help facilitate a good team dynamic on the ice. The Sharks don’t hit the ice at home until October 20th, but this seasons team is already shaping up to be worth the show. The team will have a day off tomorrow, followed by the end of camp on Wednesday at the Hart Center in Worcester, MA.

As ladies, finding a good piece of hockey clothing to rep these days can be frustrating. Not everyone is striving to be a “Future Trophy Wife”, while wearing a t-shirt that says “Puck Bunny” isn’t high on the list either. Some of us ladies just love hockey and not for the boys, but the camaraderie that one sheet of ice brings. Hockey is just as much for the girls and the beauties over at Wheels Hockey appreciate that. That’s why this week they’re launching a new line of women’s clothes that support our love for the sport and not just the boys who play it. The new line is sure to please female players and fans alike, be sure to check out the women’s page at Wheels Hockey. Thanks to Wheels, it’ll be easy to rock the rink in every color including pink!
