Thursday night, prior to the Kings hosting (and massacring) the Phoenix Coyotes, the Kings and Mister Cartoon  hosted a private media only unveiling of their latest collaboration. The Kings have entrusted and given Cartoon the honor of re-envisioning their merchandise with his own signature twist. The line of Mister Cartoon X LA Kings merchandise will include T-shirts and hats for men, women, and youth and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Para Los Ninos (For the Children), a 33-year-old non-profit organization benefiting 7,500 children and families each year.

quickCartoon also airbrushed a goalie mask that will be worn by Jonathan Quick during an upcoming game in which the artwork represents in Cartoons words “the juxtaposition of battle as the Kings defend their city on the ice this season.”

“The Kings are thrilled to be collaborating with Mister Cartoon – this is a pairing of two Los Angeles icons,” said Luc Robitaille, Kings President of Business Operations. “We look forward to celebrating this merchandise line.”

Mister Cartoon: “This project hits home to me in many special ways. From growing up as a fan of the Kings and driving past the arena they used to play at, to the classic script on the caps worn by fashion forward kids and Kings fans, the Kings are Los Angeles, the Kings are a cornerstone of Los Angeles street heritage. This opportunity is an honor.” CartoonandLuc01

A Video of the collaboration featuring Cartoon, Luc Robitaille, and Jonathan Quick can be seen here.

The line will be available at the Team LA store located inside of the Staples Center and also online at teamlastore.com

With Boston finding success in the east, the San Jose Sharks, who have been dominating the start of their season in the west hit the ice at TD Garden for a match up that never disappoints. Boston always boasts an excited crowd, but the atmosphere around the city has been growing with the Red Sox inclusion in the World Series. Boston was notably on the road for a tilt in Buffalo on Wednesday evening, a game that fell during the same time slot as Game 1 of the World Series being held at Fenway Park.  Many San Jose players found themselves inside the historic ballpark for the game during their down time in Boston. With Game 2 hitting the field just a few short miles away, it was back to business for both NHL teams. San Jose looking to keep their road trip success going after a win in Detroit on Monday, while Boston held the same ambitions in front of a sellout home crowd of 17,565.

Chad Johnson got his first nod of the season in Buffalo, giving Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask relief, but Rask was back between the pipes for Boston on Thursday and faced 39 shots. Cross ice, Sharks goaltender Antti Niemi continued his time as starter, saving 15 of 17 shots. Backup goaltender Alex Stalock has yet to start a game this season. With both Rask and Niemi, Finnish goalies in contention for Sochi, many analysts made the game out to be more than it was in terms of a Finnish rivalry. Friends in the off season, with the same agent, the game was just a regular season contest and Rask was quick to point out the positives of his opponents style.

“He’s come a long way,” said Bruins Rask on Sharks Niemi. ” I don’t think he was ever drafted, and he’s a hard worker; I know he works hard every day in practice, does a lot of extra stuff, and it’s paid off.  He’s a pretty technical guy, and he’s quick too; he’s gotten quicker I think over the years, and better side to side.  I think he’s a pretty well-rounded package as a goalie.”

A well played contest, it was Boston who went on the board first with thanks to Ignila, who had been racking up assists for the black and gold, but hadn’t netted a goal prior. The goal came at 18:48 of the second, J. Iginla (1) Wrist shot – ASST: D. Krejci (8), D. Seidenberg (3).

“I think it’s deserving,” said Bruins Head Coach Claude Julien on Iginla scoring. “He should have had one a long time ago the way he’s played. But it’s nice to see him get that goal and get rewarded for all the hard work he’s done since the start of the season.”

With chances aplenty, the Sharks played an offensively sound game but were unable to capitalize until the beginning moments of the third. Just 18 seconds in, the game was tied 1-1, goal, P. Marleau (8) Snap shot – ASST: M. Vlasic (6). Both fans and players prepared themselves for the reality that an overtime was coming, but Bruins Krejci had different plans for the outcome. After tallying an assist on the Ignila goal in the second, to the surprise of everyone, #46 sealed the Sharks fate and gave Boston the win with a tip-in at 19:59 of the third, D. Krejci (2) Tip-in – ASST: A. McQuaid (2), M. Lucic (5). The goal was a prime example of teamwork at it’s best.

“It was just basically pretty easy,” said Bruins Krejci regarding his teammates assistance. “Pretty easy but we kept it simple, Looch [Milan Lucic] chipped it in soft got the puck in the corner hit Quaider [Adam McQuaid] and knew there was not much time so he just threw it on the net and hoping for the best and luckily I was there. I put my stick on it and it went in.”

The Bruins will host the New Jersey Devils and former Bruins Jaromir Jagr and Michael Ryder on Saturday, while the Sharks continue their east coast road trip with a tilt in Montreal.

When you hear people talking about hockey it often isn’t just about the game, but the lifestyle that accompanies it. One aspect that is included for our readers of legal age, drinking. Hockey and drinking go glove and glove. Whether it’s beers post game in the parking lot with your teammates or hosting a party at home, having drink options is never a bad thing.

We headed over to the quaint and welcoming Greyhound Pub in Worcester, MA to learn the key steps in making a  few signature drinks that will appeal to both the ladies and the gentlemen at your game party! From pouring a proper Guinness, to making the bars signature shot, the Tricolor and a mixed pink drink, it’s a welcoming environment for any sports fan.

Now that I’ve been married for a full five days, I thought I’d take some time to share my “hockey wedding” with everyone while the details are still fresh in my mind. I decided to have a hockey-themed wedding not just because it is a sport my husband (!!) and I love so much, but because it has played such a huge role in our relationship.

I was not lucky enough to grow up in a hockey family. In fact, I’d never even been to a game before Tony and I started dating. We met while we were both attending UMass Lowell in 2007, but we started dating in the springtime so I didn’t really understand the extent of his college hockey fandom until he started taking me to our school’s games that fall. At first I wasn’t sure what to make of it all as we sat behind the net and I listened to him taunt the other team’s goalie.  He took it so seriously and it was such a different environment than what I was used to, given that I was a band geek in high school.

But as time went on, I learned the game and came to love it as much as he did.  Year after year, sitting in those seats behind the net every Friday and Saturday night, we got to know each other and I fell in love… with the game. And with Tony, too. 🙂

After five years together, he proposed in June 2012.

When it came time, we knew we had to do our engagement photos on the ice at the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell…

We got married on October 20, 2013.

One of my favorite details of the wedding was using Bruins pins in my bouquet and in his boutineer.

The lace on my bouquet is also from my mother’s wedding dress.

(Probably the only good photo where you can see his boutineer, but he was happy to wear the B, which worked out!)

My new sister-in-law is an unbelievable graphic designer, and I really wanted our wedding ceremony programs to feel like the rosters you get at the TD Garden at Bruins games. I, personally, think she nailed it.

And then we promised to love each other in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, whether the Bruins and the River Hawks win or lose…(not joking, our pastor actually said this during our ceremony!)

While we were off taking pictures, our guests were enjoying some more of our hockey wedding details…

Like our “guest book”…

Our seating “rosters”…

Our cake-toppers, which we got here and were custom made to look just like us, and our cakes…yes, cakes.

Of course we had a Stanley Cup cake!

For favors, we did chocolate-covered oreos which were made to resemble pucks.

And of course, I wore my River Hawk blue shoes 🙂

It was important to me to do the hockey theme in such a way that didn’t feel too over the top or like a child’s birthday party. We still wanted our wedding to feel like a romantic and classy affair – but we wanted it to reflect us as a couple.

And as a wedding gift….well, let’s just say I might be the best wife ever.

We all know that October is Hockey Fight’s Cancer month, and we all like to support it. This is an excellent way to do just that.

For the base I used Sally Hansen Lavender

Naturally for the ‘Hockey Fights Cancer’ I used Ornaments white nail art pen.

My thumb is the HFC logo of the two sticks with the band going around them.

If I had to list my top five teams in the league, the San Jose Sharks would rank fairly high. Why? It isn’t because of statistics or a roster filled with talent, although the team is stacked in those departments. I would rate the Sharks in my top five, because I grew up within 25 minutes of their AHL affiliate in Worcester, MA, a team which has some of the most dedicated fans in the league–my close friends and family among them. Thus,  much of my knowledge of the Sharks system and players is owed to them. So, while many games bleed together in my memory book, I am beyond excited to see the team hit the ice in Boston. We’ve also done stories with a few of the Sharks players, such as Logan Couture and Jason Demers.

Some games are just games and others you know are going to be quite the match up. Tonight, I was ready to see the east and west collide…

photoBreakdown:

Black Skinny Leg Dress Pants, TJMaxx, $15.00
Long Sleeve Purple Silk Blouse,  mothers closet circa the early 90’s, I cut out the shoulder pads and it’s the best blouse I own! Seriously, it’s a favorite in the rotation and even hit the ice last season when the Blackhawks won the cup.
Black Blazer, Macys, Sale, $11.98
Leopard Print Heels, Sears, $23.99
Camo Studded Bracelet, Forever 21, $4.80
Gold Belt, Old Navy, $6.99

Media Tip: Try to avoid wearing necklaces with any length to them, of course you may think your outfit needs one and chances are it does. But trying to untangle a necklace from the mandatory credential lanyard during your post game commute home isn’t the greatest experience. The lanyard will serve as a necklace just fine.

*Of note, when a team has an appreciation night, try to support it because many members of the media do. Hockey Fights Cancer was in full support for the game and lavender or purple was the color of choice – thus my purple blouse and lavender nail polish.

This week’s Throwback Thursday features one of Patrik Elias’ favorite moments in his career. His favorite moment? The 2000 Stanley Cup win.

“For me, it’s winning the first Stanley Cup by far and the whole journey,” Elias said with a smile in his eyes as he revisited this fond memory. “That feeling at the end…you’re excited and then relieved that it’s over. It’s not just the excitement that we won, it’s just the really oh my god…it’s over.

“I know what I expected before the celebrations…it was going nuts. It was the best time. After the game, we went back to the hotel after the game and we were sitting there until 4 or 5 o’clock in the morning and just kind of talked. That’s it. Talked with the guys. Larry [Robinson] was there with us at the table.

“Just talking…what it meant and what we just accomplished. That’s the one thing that kind of sticks out in my mind.”

With what seems like the Devils taking pages out of the 1995 Cup year and the 2000 Cup year to build the 2013 team, did Elias see any similarities going into this season from what he saw at the start of the 1999-00 season?

“You can’t,” he said of seeing the similarities. “You have no idea at the beginning.”

Ken Daneyko said that he knew the Devils would win the Cup that year, because the team was all about skill…skill up the wazoo.

The Boston Bruins rolled into Buffalo last night with one goal in mind, a win. The Sabres also had one goal in mind, a much needed win on home ice. Boston was able to come out with a 5-2 victory that made the Sabres look like a pee wee hockey team just skating around watching the “big boys” play.

Boston and Buffalo have a long history over brutal games stemming back to the 70s and 80s and last night was no exception. Buffalo’s Ryan Miller was still upset about a hit from Boston’s Milan Lucic last year that saw him miss a few games, while Lucic received nothing. There is also something to fight about when these two teams play each other so last night was no exception.

The game started off decent for the Bruins, and as usual not so decent for the Sabres. Miller let in a soft goal by Lucic almost at the halfway point of the first to give Boston the lead. Lucic would add another a mere 40 seconds into the second to give Boston a 2-0 lead. Buffalo’s lacking power play was finally able to break through in the second with a goal by Cody Hodgson and cut Boston’s lead in half. However, 2 minutes later Boston would get their two goal lead back by a goal from Dougie Hamilton, his second of the season. Buffalo was able to get on the board again with a goal by 18 year old Nikita Zadorov, his first of his NHL career.

The third period saw the most action in this game as Buffalo’s John Scott made a questionable hit on Boston’s Loui Eriksson. Scott would receive 2 major penalties, one for charging and one for fighting, and would be gone for the rest of the game. Eriksson was helped off the ice and spent the night in Buffalo for observation and will return to Boston sometime on Thursday. If you actually watched the game on NBS, the commentators felt the hit was wrong, which is expected coming from them, but many fans around Buffalo have felt that Scott was just finishing his hit and he was not going in with the intent to injury. This issue may get brought up to the league so we will have to see where it goes from there. During this period there was also some scoring going on, with two more goals from Boston to seal the deal. Both goals came from Torey Krug, one just before the Scott hit and one during his 5 minute penalty.

Ryan Miller played another great game for the Sabres, even though he let in 5 shots. At the other end, Bruins backup Chad Johnson only faced 16 shots and let in 2.

Miller and the Sabres head to Florida to face the Panthers on Friday still looking for the second win this season. Tuukka Rask is expected to be back in goal for Boston when they play host to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday.
