Whether you have followed my many outfits from the beginning or are just going in the paper-doll adventure, you’ve probably noticed that I don’t wear necklaces to games. For starters, I don’t wear them on a regular basis–I’m more of an earrings and big rings kind of gal. Plus, the necklaces that I do own are long and would get completely tangled into my press pass rope or my scarf.
But for the Sharks’ Sunday game against the Tampa Bay Lightning I went full tilt and busted out the neckwear. But not just any neckwear. On Sunday, I wore a “tie.”

It’s pretty well documented my over-flowing love for the masterminds behind the Twitter account NHLTies. They have not only provided me with great story material and fun in-game Twitter moments. These are genuinely wonderful people, and having someone to be silly with in an industry that can be so serious is really a breath of fresh air. I have gone so far as to paint a “dress shirt and tie” onto my nails as a manicure decal–really I love these crazies that much.
The story behind the necklace: Sunday marked my first day back from going “on strike” for a week after NHL Ties did some pretty critical judging of a colleague’s neckwear. I had contemplated getting a tie charm necklace for a bit, and the first day back from my metaphoric strike seemed like as good a time as ever to rock this. Plus, it’s so sparkly! I bought this charm at boutique across the street from my house–for ladies looking to buy something similar, I’m sure there are a plethora of online stores where you could find something similar. I chose a chain length that both complimented the neckline of my top, and wouldn’t get tangled in anything.

The rest of the ensemble: My go-to Brandy Melville skirt, pink-and-black American Dream top (which is actually a crop top, but tucked into a high-waist skirt you can’t tell), striped black Anne Klein tights and , of course, black ballet flats. The rest of my jewelry was subtle (lapis lazuli studs and ring from my grandmother, not pictured) because really, the focal point of this whole getup was the necklace.
We’ll see if my little “tie number” earns me a star on the evening.
Until the next puck drops,

It was valentine hockey games between the Arizona Coyotes and the New York Rangers ! What’s a better way to spend your V-Day, than at a hockey arena?! As I was driving in, the parking guy that is always so nice to me, gave me a Hershey’s kiss and it definitely made my day.
Two games in a row for the ‘Yotes, so obviously that meant two outfits in a row…no complaints there.
I love pencil skirts, and this lacy skirt is definitely a beauty. I originally was going to wear it for the game against San Jose, but I opted to wear it against the Rangers last night. When wearing a skirt that is a little bit more form-fitting, it’s sometimes hard to find a top to wear with it. No complaints with the top I ended up choosing.
This purple J.Crew popover is sometimes difficult to deal with. It wrinkles so easily and it’s obnoxiously long. Tucking a long shirt into a tight skirt is usually the easiest way to take your outfit from fab to frumpy. When doing the tuck, make sure you fold it over so that it stays (and tuck ’em into your spanx #noshame).
After the San Jose game, my feet weren’t really a huge fan of me, and two games in a row means double the blisters. My feet aren’t loving me, and I don’t blame them. The abuse I do to them is kind of uncouth of me, but at least they’re cute, right?
Press Level Fashion Tip: Invest in some blister serum. It will save your life (and your poor little feet).

The Minnesota Mr. Hockey award is one of the most honorable traditions in high school hockey. The award has been given to the most outstanding senior hockey player in the state of Minnesota starting in 1985, with the first winner, Tom Chorske, who would go on to play with the Minnesota Gophers and various teams in the National Hockey League. Like Chorske, many of the candidates who win the award end up playing at some further level, most play Division I in college, and some end up playing in semi professional leagues, or the NHL.
There will be a banquet at the RiverCentre on March 8th, 2015 in Saint Paul, Minnesota to not only recognize the candidates for the Mr. Hockey Award, but also present the Frank Brimsek Award, which is given to the state’s best senior goaltender. Along with these two player awards, the John Mariucci Award (Class A and Class AA coaches of the year) and the Cliff Thompson Award (“Old Timer” coach of the year) will be presented to the coaches. A panel of scouts, coaches and media from around the state selects the winners of the awards.
Among the candidates for this year’s Mr. Hockey Award are Jack Ahcan of Burnsville, Will Borgen of Moorhead, Dixon Bowen of East Grand Forks, Jake Jaremko of Elk River, Dylan Malmquist of Edina, Jack Poehling, Nick Poehling and Jack Sadek of Lakeville North, and Peter Tufto and Christiano Versich of Saint Thomas Academy. The candidates for the Frank Brimsek Award include Stephen Headrick of the Breck School and Dyllan Lubbesmeyer of Burnsville.

Minor League hockey is my Valentine this year. The players wear their hearts on their sleeve and they fight for you every shift. This hockey weekend meant two games back to back for me and as such I usually follow my rule of skirt and boots for one night and pants and heels the next. I was very tempted to change it up and wear another skirt but the allure of being comfy in a pair of stylish jeans and my favourite set of game day heels won my heart, especially after feeling a bit blue all day long.
I have a little secret to my style, I figure I should open my heart to you. I work with an amazing stylist at Nordstrom. Yes I have a personal shopper because I hate, hate browsing and because my picky side gets the better of me every time. With my stylist, she pulls a bunch of items based on what I’ve asked her for and she fills my dressing room with things I may love, things I might hate and things I may question. On more than one occasion, she has gotten me out of my box and brought a whole new look to my wardrobe. I recently went to her with the specific purpose of updating my gameday look. I came away with a go-to jacket and some nice tops that can easily slide into a night on the town after covering the hockey game. That is a W in my book.
My Hockey Valentines Day Look

Jeans: Paige Denim ( I am a big fan of the painted denim, they give you a professional look but easily move into a “late-night” look, these are the Verdugo cut)
Top: Forever 21 (two of their must-have camis layered, I’ve talked before about these tanks in every color being a must for your wardrobe)
Jacket: TopShop (my stylist picked this one for me, it’s got a great cut and has become my go-to)
Shoes Banana Republic (these shoes are unbelievably comfortable without sacrificing a wicked heel)
Friday night’s game against the San Jose Sharks is the first of the Arizona Coyotes back-to-back home game streak before they go out of town for the next couple of weeks to face the East.
Fashion-wise, that means I need to have two outfits prepared for two days in a row…As always it took me sorting through my entire wardrobe several times before I went with my original idea.
These pants are super comfy, yet so cute, and I’m in love with them. If I’m being honest with you guys (and I am), I layered a pair of leggings under the pants due to the fact that cold temperatures tend to just stick to the fabric (if that makes any sense at all). Since I’m always cold, this was the perfect solution.
But the pants. Back to those. Layering then black tank with the black pants makes the outfit look like a jumpsuit, and I love it. Jumpsuits are my favorite, and so whenever I can make myself look good enough with stuff that I already have in my closet, I’m psyched.
I wasn’t sure what I was going to do in the shoe department, but I’ve been thinking about it since I bought the pants earlier in the week. I took a couple of things into consideration when I picked the beauties I dawned on my feet.
1. I got a pedicure the other day, so my toes looked fab (though the dusty rose color I was daring enough to get I’m not sure how I feel about it).
2. These shoes are some of my faves, and it was the perfect colors to wear with the scarf.
Done and done.
Leather jackets are the best, and I feel like they make any outfit, so when it came to choosing a blazer or my trusty leather, I thought the scarf looked much better with the jacket. I really wanted to wear the scarf, because I knew it wouldn’t look good with the skirt that I want to wear for the next game against the New York Rangers, so tonight was the night.
There’s not much better than getting your hair done (goodbye, roots!) the day that you have to go somewhere because your hair is going to look ridiculously good. I don’t normally do straight, but I went with it tonight because
That is all my friends, I’ll see you for the next game! (Sorry for the awkward picture)

Going into the Arizona Coyotes game against the San Jose Sharks, the team dynamic was already exponentially different. With the recent news that Martin Hanzal would most likely be out for the rest of the season due to back surgery being required, things were changing. This isn’t the only long term, key-player loss, since forward Mikkel Boedker has been out since January 18th due to surgery on a ruptured spleen. His return does not have a timetable yet.
Young guys get their time to shine
Young players are getting their time out on that ice, and head coach Dave Tippett was confident in saying that the one’s who are out there performing like they should be are going to hit the ice, and the one’s who are taking the opportunity for granted don’t need to have a spot on the team. With AHL call up’s and down’s, there has been a steady rotation of young guys getting a chance in the spotlight. Those guys, like Tobias Rieder, have stuck around and been valuable, while others have not stayed for so long. With the trade deadline around the corner, who knows if the Coyotes will do something big, or if the players they have are going to be it until the end of the season.
The curse on home ice
The Coyotes have had a lot of momentum in games on the road, but they haven’t been able to get a win at home since January 8th. A huge shootout win against the Chicago Blackhawks on February 9th really just showed how the team seemed to be on the up-and-up. Unfortunately, their home record continued to worsen. The 4-2 loss to the Sharks was another sad notch in the loss category.
The Coyotes previously had a bad streak earlier in the season, breaking club records for consecutive games lost at home. Not so good for the ‘Yotes.
Arcobello finds his place
Mark Arcobello, the Coyotes most recent acquisition from the Pittsburgh Penguins, really made himself known in his first game with the club. He’s had quite a season so far; becoming only the third player in NHL history to play for four different teams in one season (Edmonton, Nashville, Pittsburgh).
Arcobello started off the scoring for the night in the first period, but his efforts didn’t stop there. He showed a lot of heart out on that ice during the game, and he seemed to be a strong player to add to the roster. The first several periods seemed to be filled with energy for him but just as the lead died out, it seemed as though his vigor did also.
“Yeah I got a fortunate bounce, Stoner (Michael Stone) made a good play bumping the puck back and we went and transitioned,” said Arcobello on his goal. “I was lucky enough to score there and obviously it felt good to get that one out of the way right away.”
Smitty being Smitty
Going into the San Jose game, Mike Smith had a save percentage of .934 in 8 games played since the All-Star Break. He has been a completely different goaltender since the break, and he has been a huge asset to the team. His season got off to a horrible start, but he’s redeemed himself in big games such as their recent bout with the Blackhawks (they lost 6-1 just a few short weeks ago on the same ice).
Smith had some incredible (and vital) saves in the game, but eventually his efforts were not enough. Bottom line is that you need to have a defense that isn’t making mistakes, and even if they are bad breaks and they get caught up in the wrong area, it is costing them goals and ultimately games.
Leads are meant to be built upon
How do you miss out on churning out a win after a 2-0 lead, you ask?
Well, this has been a recurring curse all season: the Coyotes get the lead, but it doesn’t go any further than that. early goals, and nothing happening for their benefit at the end. While the offense is on a streak of actually producing, they get stuck at around the first period, and nothing bounces their way. The shots are there, but the cashing in on the opportunities seem to be inadequate.
You either protect your lead with the help of some goals, or you make sure that your defense and goaltending is flawless. If you lack in any of these areas, the game is going to slip right through your fingers. This is exactly what happened to the Coyotes.
A 2-0 lead is almost a jinx on the team. In the majority of similar situations this season, that lead can not be increased. The deficit between the teams lessens, and they find themselves stuck, trailing the game by a goal and not being able to generate the offense that they need to get the goals in the critical situations.
Thoughts from the coach:
“We had a lead, but in the first period they had two breakaways that Smitty (Mike Smith) made some great saves on… It was a pretty even game all the way through but I’d like to see us capitalize on a couple more chances. I thought we battled hard but we just couldn’t come up with that next goal we needed.”
Things to know:
- Coyotes play the New York Rangers at home on February 14th at 6 pm for the first time this season.
- Coyotes will be back to play Tampa Bay Saturday, February 21st before heading off to face the Eastern conference

It’s been a season full of injuries for Arizona Coyotes Martin Hanzal, and it seems that his season has officially come to a halt. The Coyotes announced on Thursday afternoon that the forward who’s been on injured reserve for the past couple weeks is to undergo surgery on his back.
The Coyotes general manager, Don Maloney, commented on the situation saying, “Marty is going to have a procedure on his back next week, which will put him week-to-week and in all likelihood finish his season. The good thing is he’ll have time to recover and we’ll get him back as soon as possible.”
Back injuries are not a new concept for the 27-year-old who had his first back surgery after his rookie season (2007-2008). Maloney also said that this specific injury was not new to Hanzal, and that he has suffered from it for several seasons now. They see him taking the step of surgery as a way to have him healthier and ultimately more useful in the coming seasons.
Of the clubs 55 games so far this season, Hanzal has only played in 37.
“The likelihood of him returning this season is remote but we do anticipate a full recovery.” -Don Maloney, Coyotes GM.
The alternate captain’s large presence on the ice has been missed in his time spent on the IR, especially with Mikkel Boedker being out after surgery on his ruptured spleen. Boedker’s return has not been given an official timetable, but he has stayed involved with the team.
The team has seemed to be able to find a way to score. Hanzal and Boedker, but offense is an area they still lack in. The Coyotes rank 27th out of the 30 NHL teams, and so their absences do not ultimately effect their season, due to the playoffs not being probable.

With the AHL moving west for next season, preparations are already in motion for those teams that will move from the ECHL to the AHL. What has been a consistent theme for the three teams, Bakersfield Condors, Stockton Thunder and Ontario Reign, is a rebranding and update of their identity. Bakersfield and Stockton are in the midst of a “Name the Team” contest while the Reign is the only team that will keep its name as it moves to a higher level of hockey for the 2015-2016 season. They are the first to reveal a new logo and sweater design, unveiled at a press conference on Wednesday prior to the Reign home game against the Allen Americans.
“It is very important to the LA Kings that the Ontario Reign hockey club have its own unique look and logo. We did want it to represent the Kings and the brand that we have worked so hard to establish over the years, but – at the same time – we made sure it works well with Ontario,” LA Kings President of Business Operations Luc Robitaille said. “I personally like it a lot because it has that retro look and feel to it. We believe it is going to be a hit with hockey fans here and beyond.”
The new jerseys reflect the design of their parent organization, the Los Angeles Kings. “These jerseys tie us to our parent club, the Kings,” Reign President Darren Abbott said. “The Reign will begin a new era in the American Hockey League next season as the primary affiliate of the Kings.” The home jerseys are white with black and gray stripes along the waist and elbows. A black stripe accents the shoulders and sleeve of the jersey, and the Kings shield logo is featured on both shoulders. The road jerseys are black with white and grey stripes along the waist and elbows, and a grey accent along the shoulders and sleeves. The new logo is displayed prominently on the chests of both jerseys.

Looking at the new AHL jerseys in comparison to the original Reign logo, some may think they leave a bit to be desired. The new design is modeled after the 1988 season when “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky signed with the Los Angeles Kings and the Silver and Black era began for the team. Thus begins a new era for the Ontario Reign and the AHL, as the league moves west into California.
The Anaheim Ducks AHL Affiliate San Diego Gulls will be the next to reveal their logo and jersey during San Diego HockeyFest on February 22nd. Mayors Manor, who has been on top of the latest with concept logos and the AHL movement west, has what could be a preview of the design for San Diego here.
San Jose may be the next team to reveal a name (here’s hoping they go with the San Jose Seals) and logo. Expect Bakersfield and Stockton to enter the race last as they settle up with a contest.
