Hockey Hair. It’s almost an age-old tradition for male players. The style and cut hasn’t seen much of a change throughout the years, although thankfully mullet popularity has decreased. For men, it’s a wash and go mentality; for women it’s sometimes not that easy. The cold temperatures and the constant movement of skating around the ice can often lead to frizz and snarls. Not to mention your hair coming loose and flying about your helmet while you try to skate red line to red line.

Trying to find that hairstyle that will stay intact from the moment you leave the house until the moment you get back home and every workout, game, practice or daily life scenario  in between can be frustrating. While the option of popping home after the rink is viable, occasionally we just don’t have that luxury. For some ice time falls mighty early, mid day or late night; for all of us life goes on at lighting speed once we leave the rink.

Which hairstyles can lead you through your workouts and into the classroom, office, meeting or drinks with friends?

The Low Bun:
The low bun is a quick and easy hairstyle that not only allows you to wear your helmet comfortably but gives you a quick and always in style approach to the rest of your day. This look can be achieved by putting the hair into a low ponytail, twisting the tail and then wrapping the twist around the base of the ponytail at the nape of your neck. Secure the bun with a second hair tie and a few bobby pins. A fun variation on this is a braided low bun, start by putting the hair into a low ponytail and then braiding. Twist the braid around the base of the ponytail and hair tie into position.

The Side Braid:
The side braid is a simple hairstyle that is not only fashionable, but practical too. It looks like you put a little more effort into your hair than a regular low ponytail and has the added benefit of staying put and avoiding knots and tangles. Securing the hair gather it over one shoulder. Start by dividing the hair into 3 pieces (if hair is layered try to make each section as equal in length as possible before beginning). Begin braiding as you normally would, when the braid is at your desired length, secure with a hair tie. When it comes to braids of any sort, I’m a huge fan of poly bands. These small elastics are less bulky than regular hair ties and almost blend into the end of your braid. Relatively inexpensive ($2-4 at drugstores for a box of 75) these are a must have in your purse or hockey bag.

The Fishtail Braid:
This “fancy” braid takes a little bit longer to execute but the finished product is well worth is. This style is a little bit tighter in nature, it tends to withstand tests of ice time.

Added bonus: Chances are you’ll have some sexy face framing fly aways by the end of your workout which only add to the styles.

Tips: A simple (for day) or more intricate (for night) headband or hair clip can be added to any of these styles!
