Rangers and Caps
Brad Richards scored the tying goal late in the third to throw Game 5 into overtime. Unlike their last extra period play, New York finished it quickly with Marc Stall scoring 1:35 into OT to win 3-2 at Madison Square Garden. Washington’s Joel Ward was given a double-minor for high sticking with 21.3 seconds left to play in regulation giving the Rangers a 6-on-4 after pulling Lundqvist. The man-power allowed Richards to score and ultimately led the Rangers to a 3-2 series lead. Braden Holtby stopped 35 shots in the Caps’ loss. New York can close it out in Washington; Game 6 takes place in on Wednesday.
Phoenix advances
For the first time in franchise history Phoenix is heading to the Western Conference finals. The Coyotes defeated the Predators 2-1 on Monday night to take the series 4-1. Mike Smith recorded 32 saves in the win for the Coyotes who now face the LA Kings in the finals.
