Bruins Repeat Cup Quest Cut Short by Capitals

It was a heartbreaking night in Boston. Yet again another 1 goal game and an OT loss. The only difference, there is no Game 8. Now just a long summer to think about the seasons end.

It was a well matched series for both the Bruins and Capitals. Ultimately, the goaltending of Holtby for Washington and the lack of PP ability for Boston left the Bruins in the off season, and the Capitals skating on to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

“It’s a weird feeling” said Bruins Dennis Seidenberg. “Even right now, you’re wondering what time practice is tomorrow, but there is no practice” he continued, “it’s going to be a long summer.”

The players were emotional, as were the fans. After winning 3 straight Game 7’s to capture the Cup last season, the possibility of advancing to the next round wasn’t an unrealistic expectation. With 2:26 remaining in the 3rd period, the Bruins went on a power play and the Garden rose to it’s feet. With a chance to win the game and advance to the next round so close, it was clearly too good to be true. As with many power plays before, the Bruins couldn’t capitalize and the score remained 1-1 heading into OT.

On Tuesday, Coach Claude Julien had joked in reference to shootout drills,

“That’s how you decide a Game 7 right?”

Perhaps had that been true, the Bruins and their fans would be looking at an entirely different outcome. Not the 2-1 OT loss that will be sure to loom in their minds for weeks to come.

In a gesture that sums up the Bruins organization, the team gathered at center ice to salute the fans that supported them through a rocky season. Despite the loss, Boston is sure to be a glow with black and yellow all the way through the summer months, anxiously awaiting the puck drop of opening night in October.
